On Thursday, October 10th, 2024 at 5.30PM, in the context of the exhibition project FAVENTIA. Ceramica italiana contemporanea [FAVENTIA. Contemporary Italian Ceramics], curated by Roberto Lacarbonara and Gaspare Luigi Marcone, BUILDINGBOX is pleased to invite you to the meeting: Carlo Zauli. L’artista e il museo[Carlo Zauli: the artist and the museum].
Matteo Zauli, son of the artist and director of the Carlo Zauli Museum in Faenza, Italy, will talk about the creative journey of Carlo Zauli (Faenza, 1926-2002) with a focus on the works exhibited at BUILDINGBOX from October 10th to November 11th, 2024. The meeting will also be an opportunity to introduce the various activities of the Carlo Zauli Museum, founded in 2002 at the will of the artist’s sons – Monica, Laura and Matteo – and which over the years has become a point of reference for contemporary research. In fact, at the Faenza-based museum, where many of the artist’s works from his beginnings to his last years of activity can be admired, various meetings, courses and workshops are also organized – ceramics, art therapy, dance therapy – in addition to the course for curators and the renowned artist residency, which over the years has presented works by both young and established artists of national and international standing. The various projects are often in collaboration with other Italian and foreign museums or institutions such as academies of fine arts, foundations, and galleries. After several months of closure and restoration due to the tragic floods that hit Emilia Romagna in May 2023, the museum restarted with new strength and enthusiasm by resuming its exhibition and research activities.
FAVENTIA. Ceramica italiana contemporanea [FAVENTIA. Contemporary Italian Ceramics] project maps and summarises some of the main artistic expressions related to the 20th and 21st centuries ceramics, promoting a series of artists from different generations who, consistently or sporadically with respect to their own production, use clay working techniques by continuing, recovering, or revolutionising the extraordinary manual skill of moulding, and the chromatic-luminist value of the glazes.
The ancient Faventia has been a land of artisan production since Roman times, a characteristic that was enhanced in later centuries. Indeed, it became synonymous of the majolica ceramics in many languages – French (faïance), English (faience). In recent years, many artists have used the Faenza kilns – also thanks to residency programmes, exhibitions, workshops, prizes, and publications – for the artistic production of medium and large-scale sculptures, often designed for an environmental development and installation purposes.
