The Consulate General of Italy in London is delighted to present the works of artist Sophie Ko for the first time in the United Kingdom, with two exhibition events curated by Elena Re at the Italian Cultural Institute in London and at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, and with the collaboration of Bologna’s Galleria de’ Foscherari.

Through a wide selection of works, the rooms of the Italian Cultural Institute will host an exhibition in which the curatorial intent is to highlight the beating heart of the artist’s work: her own ‘geography’. These are works that contain the ashes of burnt images, or pure pigments that the artist sometimes stratifies with gold dust. These are works steeped in a sense of fascination, for as it duels with the force of gravity, matter transforms over time, in a process that represents an expression of continual rebirth. As Elena Re states: “With this work, Sophie Ko paved the way to her own approach to conceiving figuration, coming up with something that straddles painting and sculpture, something only time can draw.”
