Gianluca Balocco

M.O.O.R. (Mind Opens Our Reality) is the artistic name of Gianluca Balocco (Verona, 1964), an artist, architect and techno-humanist. Trained in painting, sculpture and photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Verona, he graduated in Architecture in Venice and later specialised in Multimedia Communication at the Politecnico di Milano. He is a Leica Certified Photographer.
For more than forty years, his research has investigated the transformation of the image and, in particular, the evolution and experimentation of photographic languages. Photography is progressively removed from the condition of a stable image to become matter, environment, temporal process and perceptual system. His practice has moved through different phases, from early material and photographic experimentation to multivision and digital processing, and on to contemporary interperceptive systems. His most recent research integrates art, neuroscience, eye tracking, biometrics, artificial intelligence and studies of perception, developing trans-pictorial languages and a systemic understanding of photography. The image is conceived not as a fixed representation, but as a relational organism and a field of possibilities, capable of changing through light, time, space, memory and the presence of the observer. This research has generated systems and environments such as The4tDimension, Impermanence, chromolographies, RGBW Rayboxes and Neural Temple. In 1993 Achille Bonito Oliva invited him to the 45th Venice Biennale with Viaggio senza Passaporto; in 2024 he was Special Guest at the Cameroon Pavilion of the 60th Venice Biennale. Throughout his career, his works and projects have been presented in major international museum and institutional contexts, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Japanese museums within the exhibition Mistero e Mito. Momenti della pittura italiana (1994), the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea GNAMC in Rome, and Palazzo Ducale in Mantua. Tra i progetti museali internazionali figura inoltre 13 poètes pour Marseille, installazione dedicata alla poesia marsigliese, presentata al Musée de la Vieille Charité in collaborazione con il Centre International de Poésie Marseille (CIPM). Between 2025 and 2026 he developed four exhibition projects in China, across Xiamen, Shenzhen and Harbin, including immersive installations. His works are held in public and institutional collections including MART – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, the Civic Museums of Venice – Ca’ Pesaro and Palazzo Fortuny, the Musée de la Vieille Charité / Centre International de Poésie in Marseille, Museo Civico Francesco Messina in Milan, and HDC Museum in Harbin.
In 2026, he publishes The Osmotic Field of Perception: A Techno-Humanist Artist in the Age of Digital Hallucinosiswith ILI Editore, a work that intertwines theoretical reflection and artistic experience, exploring the processes of perception and the transformations of the image in the relationship between human beings, technology, and consciousness.
